Harmony Mid-year Review

About these pages:
This review is based on material found in the first 14 chapters of Tonal Harmony With an Introduction to Twentieth-Century Music by Stefan Kosta and Dorothy Payne. It lists topics over which you should have a good working knowledge at the beginning of your second semester of Harmony study.

Some of the pages contain question marks ( [??] )--many of them next to specific topic listings; clicking on these will display interactive questions in the right-hand pane. Score is not kept automatically, so you'll need to do that yourself if you're interested.

How to use this Review:
How you approach this Review will depend on a number of factors, most of which you will need to evaluate for yourself. That being said, you might consider framing the depth of your review based on the grade you earned for the first semester of Harmony study; for example:

Grade EarnedSuggested approach to the Review
A, A-Scan the list of topics for each chapter; confirm that there's no ambiguity in your mind regarding what each line suggests. Answer at least some of the questions to make sure you have a firm grasp of the material.
B+, BRead each topic listing carefully and confirm that you can easily recall the information that topic suggests; answer at least half of the questions.
B- or lessRead each topic listing and its supporting material carefully. If you sense any ambiguity in your understanding of the topic, go back to the Kostka & Payne textbook for some additional study (perhaps start with the Summary found at the end of each chapter); as may be appropriate, read relevant sections in the text and answer questions at the following Checkpoint(s). Return to this Review and answer all the questions on a topic only after you feel you've mastered the material from the text.

In any case, while this is intended to be a self-study review, you may find it beneficial to work with a fellow student or at the direction of a tutor.
